— (noun) An untranslatable, Russian word – Vladimir Nabokov describes it best: “No single word in English renders all the shades of toska. At its deepest and most painful, it is a sensation of great spiritual anguish, often without any specific cause. At less morbid levels it is a dull ache of the soul, a longing with nothing to long for, a sick pining, a vague restlessness, mental throes, yearning. In particular cases it may be the desire for somebody or something specific, nostalgia, love-sickness. At the lowest level it grades into ennui, boredom.” (via les-espaces-et-les-sentiments)

“Really, he did?” she smiled, her expression brightening at the mention of Christian. “Rose misses you too, Dimitri. She wouldn’t shut up about it for almost a week after you and Christian left Court. And please, call me Lissa.”
A small smile crossed his lips. “I shall,” he promised, and almost felt like apologizing for his girlfriend. On the other hand, there was a reason why the two of them were so close to her.
“You finally admitted it. I thought it was gonna take more out of you.” she responded as she watched his eyes gazed over the area. Tessa assumed it was something all guardians were trained to do. A mistake couldn’t be made, not after what she learned had happened.
"I suppose it is one of my off days,” was said shortly, but with a certain twinkling humor to it. This woman was good company, and in spite of his anti-social tendencies, he didn’t want to scare her away.
As a highly trained guardian Rose picked up on everything happening in the room. Rather it was the older women knitting in the corner, dark eyes silently watching her younger family members or the way each of Dimitri’s sisters clung to him in their own personal way. But still she enjoyed the atmosphere and was thankful for her developed senses because the dhampir did not want to miss a moment of their shared short time here.
“He’s only angry because he hadn’t agreed sooner to visiting, if anyone is stubborn it’s Dimitri.” She says clucking her tongue against the back of her teeth. “So serious about work all the time it’s a miracle we spend any time together.” Not that she’d complain, after all secret meet ups in empty storage rooms were pretty hot. "It is amazing how much you’ve grown though, I know it’s been a few years but I’m a little jealous. You’re beautiful.” Rose says meeting the eyes of Dimitri youngest sister.
Of course that Hathaway knew that she was attractive as well, it was made obvious by the number of males that were constantly hitting on her much to her boyfriends dissmary. But still the Russian women had a different sort of beauty and it was leaving Rose a little green.
Long, black lashes connected with rose-blooming cheeks as Viktoria looked down, flushing with pleasure over the compliment. An embarrassed chuckle hid her her uncertainty, and she quickly straightened her back – as much as she could, sitting on the ground as she was. Her reactions were not far from what Dimitri had imagined from ten-year-old Viktoria, but since she had grown – and due to the looks on Sonya and Karolina’s faces – he would guess that she was usually not that easily charmed.
He briefly wondered what Rose had done last time, which had earned his sister’s respect so, but was distracted when said sister rose from the ground. Coincidentally, it was at the exact same time as Karolina got up to aid Paul, who was yel- ling bloody murder from the kitchen. Dimitri was somewhat glad that Rose’s Russian was mediocre at best.
While Paul’s profanities continued from the kitchen, his mother’s voice now attempting to soothe him with quickly spoken words, Viktoria had crossed the space between her previous seat and Rose’s current one. With an air of authority, she grabbed the guardian’s hand and pulled her up to her feet. Then, as if she was playing with dolls, Viktoria dragged her three steps to the couch, where the Siberian motioned for Rose to sit next to the second guardian in the room; Dimitri. Now that Karolina had left their company, there was plenty of space for her in the couch. "What is beautiful,” Viktoria declared as she took Rose’s spot instead, “is you two, together.”
It was Dimitri’s turn to look embarrassed, although he wasted no time; his arm almost automatically wrapped itself around Rose’s waist, pulling her close. Just as she had pointed out, they were usually so very busy. To be able to just hold her close, especially out in the open and with such ease, was truly amazing. “Did мама tell you to say that ?” he asked his sister, genuinely curious. When Viktoria simply shrugged, Dimitri could not hold back a small chuckle, and when his eyes caught Rose’s, he decided to explain, “My mother’s very eager to see me… settle.”
